a bit of history
In 1929, roughly a hundred years ago, the first tram passed through Amsterdam’s Scheldestraat and the housing block containing number 26 was completed. It soon became a lively street, home to a fruit and deli shop, a sandwich shop, and an upholstery firm, as well as a rest home and a dentist.
Nowadays, it is a location rich in history in a neighbourhood which has many stories to tell. It is a district with real character and a somewhat rebellious streak – shoulders back and chin up: this is where we stand. Yet at the same time the area is warm, human and welcoming. Here, you sense past and present coming together. You sense it in the art, in the architecture and in the small gardens in front of the houses.
In 1967, the well-known photo and electronics shop Capi-Lux opened its doors at number 26, and in 1996, Ria Vermue Makelaardij followed. After a takeover in 2014, the company continued with its new name of River Makelaardij.
In 2025, River Makelaardij embraces a new direction, complete with a fresh new look. We are ready for the future and are choosing a modern way of working, open to new ideas and innovation. At the same time, we have carefully considered what we would like to preserve from the long history behind us. Because without a past, there is no present and no future.
